Le Bulletin du Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle, revue bimestrielle, paraît depuis

1895 et publie des travaux originaux relatifs aux diverses branches de la Science.

Les tomes 1 à 34 (1895-1928), constituant la l re série, et les tomes 35 à 42 (1929-1970),

constituant la 2 e série, étaient formés de fascicules regroupant des articles divers.

A partir de 1971, le Bulletin 3 e série est divisé en six sections (Zoologie — Botanique —

Sciences de la Terre —- Sciences de l’Homme — Sciences physico-chimiques — Écologie

générale) et les articles paraissent, en principe, par fascicules séparés.

Types of Cicadellinae (Homoptera, Gcadellidae)

in the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 1

Résumé. — Cet article rapporte la liste des Cicadellinae (Insectes-Homoptères) des collections

du Muséum de Paris que l’auteur a étudiés et auxquels il a attribué le statut de lectotype.

Abstract. — This paper relates to Cicadellinae (Insecta-Homoptera) specimens seen by the

author in the Paris Muséum and to which he afïixed lectotype label.

This is written to stabilize the identities of a number of taxa of Cicadellinae, described

by several authors, and now in the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle in Paris. The

specimens were examined through the kindness of Dr A. Villiers. The work was made

possible by a leave of absence for research from the University of North Carolina at Raleigh

and financial support from that institution and the National Science Foundation.

There follows a sériés of lectotype sélections. These are arranged alphabetically

by taxa. Complété information concerning the lectotype follows the bibliographie citation

which follows the binomen. The labels are cited as they appear on the specimens. The

individual labels are separated by the word “ and ”, the individual lines on a given label

are separated by a semicolon (;). A lectotype label has been added to each of the speci¬

mens, the bibliographie citations to the original descriptions follow Metcalf’s code letters

in his “ Bibliography of the Homoptera ” (see Literature Cited) as do the references in the

section on Literature Cited. The code letter is followed by a colon (:), then by the page

number of the original description.

This work is preliminary to a révision of the généra of Cicadellinae now being pre-

pared by the author. Illustrations of nearly ail of the lectotypes published here will be

published in the larger, later work.

armata, Jilijapa Melichar, 1925 a : 356. Lectotype male with labels : “ Cochinchine ”

and “ Muséum Paris ; Coll. G. Fallou 259-95 ” and “ Jilijapa ; armata Mel. ” There was

also a specimen without an abdomen in the collection.

blanchardi, Tettigonia Signoret, 1855 d : 788. Lectotype female with labels : “ Blan-

chardi. Sigt. ; Guatemala lt was the only specimen in the collection with an indication

that Signoret had seen it. The markings, but not the form of the anterior dorsum, agreed

with the original illustration. The markings of the forewings were not accurate in the

original illustration.

cosmopolita, Tettigonia Signoret, 1853 b : 364. Lectotype female. Amyot and Ser-

ville collection, with a blank, blue, circular label and the label : “ cosmopolita Sigt. ” In

the line collection, there was a long sériés of specimens from Africa, and one from Brazil

(mislabeled ?), but none bearing any indication that Signoret had seen them.

edwardsi, Tettigonia Signoret, 1855 d : 780. Lectotype female with labels : “ Edward-

sii ; Sigt. ; Guatemala ”. It was the only specimen in the collection.

esmeraldae, Proconia Melichar, 1924 a : 203. Lectotype male with labels : “ Muséum

Paris ; Guyane française ; Rey 1909 ”. There were nineteen additional specimens in the

collection.

flammea, Tettigonia Signoret, 1855 a : 50. Lectotype female with labels : “ 128 : 98 ”

and “ Muséum Paris ; Cayenne ” and “ flammea Sigt. ” This was the only specimen in

the collection. It agreed fairly well with the original illustration.

flavosparsa, Tettigonia Signoret, 1853 c : 674. Lectotype female with a circular,

green, blank label and labels : “ M/M ” and “ flavoadspersa [sic !] type ; Sigt ”. It agreed

very well with the original description and illustration. This was the only specimen

in the collection.

irrorata, Cieada Fabricius, 1794 a : 33. Lectotype with labels : “ C. irrorata ; A. in

Carolina ; Fai) -f- ” and “ Type

nitida, Tettigonia Signoret, 1855 d : 799. Lectotype female with labels : “ T. nitida ;

Guatemala $ ; Ann. Soc. Eut. ; 3 vol. p. f. 20 ”, The form of the specimen agréés with

the original illustration. It was the only specimen in the collection.

niveum, Diestostemma Melichar, 1924 a : 216. Lectotype female with labels : “ Muséum

Paris ; Venezuela ; em. Merida ; Boursey 1901 ” and “ Diestostemma ; nivea n. sp. in

Melichar’s handwriting ” and “ Determ. ; Melichar ”. This was the only specimen in the

collection.

pavo, Tettigonia Signoret, 1853 c : 675. Lectotype, abdomen missing with a blank,

white, circular label and the label : “ Pavo Sigt Type ”. It agreed with the original illus¬

tration except that the anterior half of the apical blue circle of each forewing was very

weakly colored. It was the only specimen in the collection.

sexlineata, Tettigonia Signoret, 1855 d : 792. Lectotype female with labels : “ Muséum

Paris ; Guatemala ” and “ Sexlineata ; Sigt. ; Guatemala ”. The original illustration was

not very good. There was one additional female in the collection.

spatulata, Tettigonia Signoret, 1854 a : 722. Lectotype, abdomen missing, with labels :

“ Spatulata Signoret ; Nouvelle Grenade ”. It agreed with the original illustration except

that the markings were orange instead of yellow in the specimen, and the head was not

abruptly narrowed behind the apex.

lis Mel. This was the only specimen in the collection.

undata, Cicada Fahricius, 1794 a : 32. Lectotype female with labels : “ C. undata ;

Muséum national d Histoire naturelle, 57, rue Cuvier, 75005 Paris. Ils seront accompa¬

gnés d’un résumé en une ou plusieurs langues. L’adresse du Laboratoire dans lequel le

travail a été effectué figurera sur la première page, en note infrapaginale.

Le texte doit être dactylographié à double interligne, avec une marge suffisante, recto

seulement. Pas de mots en majuscules, pas de soulignages (à l’exception des noms de genres

et d’espèces soulignés d’un trait).

Il convient de numéroter les tableaux et de leur donner un titre ; les tableaux

compliqués devront être préparés de façon à pouvoir être clichés comme une fîgure-

Les dessins et cartes doivent être faits sur bristol blanc ou calque, à l’encre de chine.

Envoyer les originaux. Les photographies seront le plus nettes possible, sur papier brillant,

et normalement contrastées. L’emplacement des figures sera indiqué dans la marge et les

légendes seront regroupées à la fin du texte, sur un feuillet séparé.

Un auteur ne pourra publier plus de 100 pages imprimées par an dans le Bulletin,

en une ou plusieurs fois.

Une seule épreuve sera envoyée à l’auteur qui devra la retourner dans les quatre jours

au Secrétariat, avec son manuscrit. Les « corrections d’auteurs » (modifications ou addi¬

tions de texte) trop nombreuses, et non justifiées par une information de dernière heure,

pourront être facturées aux auteurs.

Ceux-ci recevront gratuitement 50 exemplaires imprimés de leur travail. Ils pourront
